Michael
Graves is an influential American postmodern architect and designer.
Postmodern architecture combines new ideas with traditional forms.
Michael Graves shows this in his designs. He also uses color, texture,
and cubism in his designs.
Michael
Graves was born on July 9, 1934, in Indianapolis, Indiana. When he was
young, he already had a gift for drawing and painting. Because of all
his drawing his mother was worried he might want to become an
artist. So one day his mother said that he should an engineer
or
an architect. He asked her what an engineer was.
After she
answered, he said he was going to be an architect. He began
drawing the neighbors houses the next day.
Thats how his interest in
architecture began. He was lucky enough to go to a pubic
school
that had drawing classes where he excelled so much that they had to
create classes for him so he would not get bored. He later
trained to be an architect at the University of Cincinnati and Harvard
University. He received a masters degree in architecture at
Harvard University in 1959. After graduation for Harvard,
Michael
Graves when to Rome. The classical architecture and painting there had
a lasting effect on his ideas of design and influenced him greatly. He
realized how important the floor, the roof, the ceiling, the windows,
the walls, and the columns were. They are what give the
structure
character.
